Willows Lake (Mixed)

Final - 29/09/2017

Willows lake (old match lake)

As this event is proving very popular, we will be using the whole lake if 20 competitors booked on. Otherwise it will be the top half nearest the tackle shop.

The lake is approximately 22 acres in size with depths ranging between 3ft and 12ft.  Willows is the carp runs water of the venue with a stock of 7,000 plus carp between 3lb and 30lb plus with an average size of around 15lb.
There are many features on this lake including an island, margins, gravel bars, silt spots and deep channels. The lake has been known to do big weights of carp over 48hr sessions of up to 700lb plus.

There is an onsite tackle shop and Cafe/Burger bar serving hot food and drinks during opening hours. If you would like food delivering to your peg there is a small charge of £1.00 that goes towards the ‘www.carping4charity.com’

Toilets are open 24 hours, 7 days a week with running water. These are cleaned and inspected every day. Drinking water is available from the tap outside. There is also a shower if needed.

Willows Lakes are protected 24 hours a day by CCTV cameras

This lovely lake is a cracking carp match venue, which can produce some staggering weights when everything is in sync. With favourable weather conditions and competent anglers who have the fish in front of them the sky is the limit at Willows.

Post Match Report

Our end of year curtain closer, the Mixed Carp Cup social match, started with a bang as Bev Clifford and fishing partner Stuart Lennox caught a 17lb+ mirror carp within 15 minutes of the start. By Friday night we had 11 of the 19 competing pairs on the scoreboard. With Paula Marriott and Darren Pace from peg 18 out in front on 58lb 5oz. They were followed by Mixed Carp Cup regulars Linzi and Terry Overend with 3 fish for 34lb 13oz with 9 other pairs following closely behind. Saturday arrived and three pegs were clearly ahead of the rest of the field. At this point there was less than 30lb between 1st and 3rd. Paula and Darren in peg 18 were still in front but were being chased by Joanne Barlow and new partner for this year Matthew Whittaker (Joanne and husband David were the 2016 champions). Jo Green and Thomas Duncan Dunlop were in third place and 10 other pairs made up the remaining pack. The social side of this event started at 1pm Saturday when the competition stopped for three hours and all the anglers attended the BBQ at HQ. With all the lines out of the water it didn’t take long for the fish to start showing themselves in full view of the socialising anglers, match officials and media crew.

Saturday post BBQ the catch rate went through the roof with several pegs getting in on the action. By the early hours of Sunday the leaders had changed with Joanne and Matthew of peg 17 now in front, moving Paula and Darren down into second. Jo and Thomas, peg 13, were just hanging on to a podium place. But moving up rapidly were last year’s third place pairing of Kay Holloway and Nathan Crowder. As the hours passed peg 17 started to extend their lead while pegs 18 and 13 slowed down. This opened the door for peg 11 who now had fish stacked up in front of them. Joanne and Matthew were neck and neck with Kay and Nathan with a little over an hour to go but it was peg 11 who secured the victory with 2 double figure fish in the final 20 minutes. The top two pairs both ended up with over 200lb each while 3rd had 169lb+. Even fourth put in excess of 100lb on the scales. 14 of the 19 pairs registered fish. It was an extremely exciting match and any of the top three pairs could have taken the win right up until the final hooter.

We had a team of quality marshals provided by Shuttleworth College Fish Management and due to both the size and shape of the lake and the volume of fish being caught we couldn’t have managed without them. It was a very good weekend and this event gets stronger every year with people already putting their names down for the next one. There were a host of well known carp anglers present and several of the England Ladies Carp Team. The biggest fish was a 19lb 14oz mirror caught by Sam Ely and Matt Oakley in the last half hour of the match.

We are looking forward to watching it on BT Sport in a few weeks.
